The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) today, culminating in a significant transition of governance as new board members were elected. The previous Trustees – Peter Mazey, Jenny Setto, Sikeli Tuinamuana, Alipate Naiorosui, and Mosese Naivalu – have successfully navigated the FRU through a crucial period of restructuring, providing the incoming leadership with a robust foundation for Fiji rugby’s future.
During their tenure, the outgoing Trustees achieved several notable milestones, including:
– Implementing a new FRU Constitution, which modernizes governance practices and promotes transparency.
– Securing a valuable position on the World Rugby Council, showcasing Fiji’s influence and representation within global rugby.
– Overhauling operations by appointing a CEO who reports directly to the Board, facilitating better accountability and strategic planning.
– Achieving a financial turnaround, with profits of FJD 1.6 million in 2023, contrasted with a loss of FJD 1.5 million in the prior year.
– Clearing longstanding debts, including a FJD 2.7 million loan from World Rugby, setting the organization up for sustainability.
The outgoing Trustees expressed pride in their achievements and emphasized the collective effort of the FRU staff, members, and partners. They believe that Fiji Rugby is now on a solid trajectory for future success. Peter Mazey highlighted the importance of addressing past issues to pave the way for a brighter future.
The newly elected board members are as follows:
– Mosese Naivalu – Legal Director
– John Sanday – Commercial Director
– Tevita Tuiloa – Commercial Director
– Cathy Wong – Women’s Director
– Koli Sewabu – Rugby Director
– Conway Beg – Rugby Director
These leaders will guide the future strategic direction of Fiji Rugby, concentrating on talent development, enhancing national team performance, and expanding the sport’s growth both locally and internationally.
As FRU moves into this new chapter, all stakeholders remain dedicated to fostering a legacy that will inspire future generations of players and fans. This transition signifies not just a change in leadership but also a renewed commitment to excellence and development in Fiji’s rich rugby culture, offering hope and excitement for what lies ahead.
