The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is one step closer to regaining its position in the World Rugby Council after the approval of its new structure at a special general meeting held at the Novotel Suva Lami Bay Hotel. The newly approved structure designates the Fiji Rugby Football Union Charity Trust as the overseer for its two main branches: a commercial branch and an operational branch.
Under this new direction, the FRU will form a new managing company, Fiji Rugby Union Pte Ltd. This company will house the constitution, the FRU’s board of directors, the chief executive officer, and ensure the smooth running of Rugby House.
The FRU has also secured a 49% share in Counter Ruck Pte Ltd, the company behind the Fijian Drua franchise.
Peter Mazey, chair of the FRU board of trustees, remarked that reaching the optimal structure required a lengthy process and invaluable input from their unions. He conveyed his pride in their members and the process, expressing optimism about the future of rugby.
World Rugby oversight committee leader, Dr Robin Mitchell, and Bruce Cook, who assisted with drafting the legal documents for their constitution, attended the special general meeting.
The FRU’s next move will be to present this new structure to World Rugby for readmission into the council. The upcoming annual general meeting to discuss this further is scheduled for within the next 45 days.
