Fiji Rugby Union launches CEO search as 2026 season looms

The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is actively seeking a new chief executive officer, with the job opening announced on Saturday across several platforms. This development was confirmed by FRU Board Chairman John Sanday, who provided further insights into the ongoing recruitment process.

Koli Sewabu, who has been serving as acting CEO since May, is among those expressing interest in the permanent position. His interim role was set to conclude this month after six months of leadership, during which he has worked closely with the board to refine a strategic plan geared towards the union’s next four years.

Sanday remarked, “Mr. Sewabu is free to apply. He will continue performing his duties as acting CEO until the position is filled.” Notably, as Sewabu steps forward to apply, he has been excused from all procedures related to the search for a new CEO to maintain integrity in the recruitment process.

In addition to the CEO search, the FRU has announced openings for other key roles, including chief financial officer, human resources manager, and risk compliance officer. Sanday stated, “These vacant positions will be filled before the end of this month so we can position ourselves strongly for the 2026 season, which will be the biggest ever.”

This transformation within the FRU indicates a deliberate effort to enhance its operational capabilities, aiming to foster high performance and capitalize on commercial opportunities in global rugby. The board is determined to elevate the union’s status, as it prepares for significant events over the next decade.

Engagement with local firm Maxumise to facilitate the talent search underscores the FRU’s commitment to thorough leadership transitions, laying a strong foundation for both men’s and women’s rugby programs in the region. As Fiji Rugby gears up for a brighter future, the focus on strong leadership and governance bodes well for its aspirations on the international stage.

Overall, this phase in Fiji Rugby’s evolution reflects renewed optimism for sustained growth, striving to reshape its identity and performance at both national and global levels. This strategic reorganization signals a hopeful outlook for all stakeholders in the sport.
