Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has acknowledged the concerns raised by former Flying Fijians Captain Waisea Nayacalevu regarding corruption and poor management within the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU), stating that these issues call for immediate action. Rabuka discussed the ongoing administrative challenges faced by the FRU following Nayacalevu’s interview with the Daily Mail UK.
He mentioned that he had anticipated some level of maladministration within the FRU, especially after their recent decision to exclude government involvement in its operations. “When they (FRU) finally decided that the government will have no role in the running of the FRU, I said, okay, it is their organization, they deal with it as they see fit,” Rabuka noted.
During a Special General Meeting (SGM) held at the Novotel Suva Lami Bay Convention Centre, the 26 member unions approved a new structural change. This change will allow unions to nominate and vote for their desired candidates for various positions, eliminating any government or World Rugby appointments.
Rabuka emphasized that while managing their affairs falls under the responsibility of the FRU, his focus remains on supporting the national team, the Flying Fijians. He recalled an incident from last year when the team was contemplating a boycott of the World Cup quarterfinal match, assuring them, “Let the team train and the Government will send the money.” He affirmed that the national team deserves comprehensive support.
