The Fiji Rugby Union is committed to assisting Olympian and rugby sevens star Jerry Tuwai as he embarks on his coaching career. Following Fiji’s silver medal achievement at the recent Olympic Games, Tuwai has expressed his intention to transition from playing to coaching.
While this marks the end of a significant chapter for one of Fiji’s notable sevens players, it opens doors to a realm that few Fijians have entered and succeeded in. Interim chair of the FRU, Peter Mazey, stated that they will ensure Tuwai receives the necessary training for his coaching aspirations.
“Jerry wants to go into coaching, and we respect that as he recognizes the conclusion of his playing career. He is a remarkable individual with much to contribute to coaching and rugby,” Mazey commented. He noted that Tuwai has yet to undergo formal coaching training, emphasizing the need for him to engage in this new endeavor.
Mazey shared positive feedback from the Fiji 7s coaching staff regarding Tuwai’s impact as a mentor. “We are committed to working with Jerry, as he brings a wealth of knowledge. The reviews highlighted the significant influence he had on the team, especially during his mentorship, which led to impressive results including a silver medal.”
The FRU is focused on enhancing the skills of local coaches, recognizing that investing in coaching development is crucial. “We understand the importance of dedicating resources to our coaches and are in the process of finalizing plans to send coaches abroad for further training with experienced head coaches,” added Mazey.
Currently, Tuwai is taking time off to be with his family, while Fiji 7s head coach Osea Kolinisau has also voiced his support for Tuwai’s pursuit of a coaching career.
