Fiji Rugby Union Backs Tuwai’s New Coaching Adventure

The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is poised to back Jerry Tuwai, the Olympian and rugby sevens star, as he embarks on his coaching career. Following the Fiji 7s silver medal achievement at this year’s Olympic Games, Tuwai announced his intention to transition into coaching, signaling the end of his playing days.

While Tuwai’s departure marks a significant moment for one of Fiji’s accomplished sevens athletes, it also opens the door to a new journey in a field where only a few Fijians have thrived. FRU interim chair Peter Mazey emphasized their commitment to provide Tuwai with the necessary training to succeed in coaching.

“Jerry wishes to enter the coaching realm, and we respect that decision as he acknowledges the end of his playing career. He is a remarkable individual with much to contribute to coaching and rugby,” said Mazey. He noted that Tuwai hasn’t received formal coaching training yet, and highlighted the various levels within coaching that he will need to navigate.

Mazey also reflected on positive feedback from Fiji 7s coaches and management following Olympic reviews concerning Tuwai’s influence. “We are committed to working with Jerry as he has much to offer. The reviews showed the significant impact he made when he stepped in as a mentor, especially considering the team’s turnaround. After suffering 22 tournament losses, he brought focus to the players, ultimately leading them to silver, which is an incredible achievement.”

The FRU is also channeling substantial resources into enhancing the skills of local coaches. “We recognize the importance of investing in our coaches and are in the process of planning to send them abroad to learn from experienced head coaches. It’s crucial that we cultivate our local talent,” Mazey added.

Currently, Tuwai is relishing his time off with his family. Osea Kolinisau, the head coach of Fiji 7s, has also voiced his encouragement for Tuwai to earnestly pursue his coaching aspirations.
