The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is prepared to assist Olympian and rugby sevens star Jerry Tuwai as he embarks on his coaching career. Following Fiji’s silver medal achievement in rugby sevens at the recent Olympic Games, Tuwai announced his intention to transition into coaching as he retires from playing.
While this marks the end of a significant chapter for one of Fiji’s standout sevens players, it also opens a new path in a field in which only a few Fijians have succeeded. FRU interim chair Peter Mazey stated that the union will provide Tuwai with the necessary training to succeed in coaching.
“Jerry aspires to pursue coaching, and we respect his decision, as he recognizes this is a turning point in his career. He is a remarkable individual, and I believe he has a lot to contribute to coaching and rugby,” Mazey remarked. He further noted that Tuwai has yet to receive formal coaching training, emphasizing the various levels of coaching expertise that Tuwai will need to develop.
Mazey highlighted the positive feedback from the Fiji 7s coaches and management regarding Tuwai’s mentorship during the Olympic Games. “We will collaborate with Jerry as he has much to offer. It was fascinating to see the effect he had on the team as a mentor. After 22 tournament losses, he stepped in, worked with the players, and helped them understand their objectives, leading to their impressive silver medal finish,” he explained.
The FRU is also committed to enhancing the skills of local coaches, recognizing the need for significant investment in their development. Mazey mentioned plans to send local coaches abroad to gain experience alongside established head coaches.
Currently, Tuwai is enjoying a break and spending quality time with his family. Fiji 7s head coach Osea Kolinisau has also expressed his encouragement for Tuwai to actively pursue his coaching ambitions.
