The Fiji Rugby Union is poised to assist Olympian and rugby sevens star Jerry Tuwai as he embarks on his coaching career. Tuwai announced his intentions to transition into coaching after contributing to Fiji’s silver medal win at the recent Olympic Games, signaling the end of his playing days.
This marks not only the conclusion of a remarkable era for one of Fiji’s most celebrated sevens players but also the commencement of a new chapter in a field that has seen only a select few Fijians excel.
FRU interim chair Peter Mazey affirmed the union’s commitment to providing Tuwai with the necessary coaching training. “Jerry wants to go into coaching, and we respect that decision. He’s nearing the end of his playing career and recognizes it. He is a unique individual and has a lot to contribute to coaching and rugby,” Mazey commented.
He noted that Tuwai is yet to undergo formal coaching training and emphasized that coaching involves various levels that Tuwai needs to navigate. Mazey also highlighted the positive feedback from the Fiji 7s coaches and management regarding Tuwai’s influence following the Olympic tournament, where he served as a mentor. “The review revealed the significant impact he had on the team. After a series of 22 tournament losses, he engaged with the players, guiding them toward their goals. Their achievement of a silver medal is remarkable,” he stated.
The FRU is dedicated to enhancing the skills of local coaches and prioritizing this area in their resource allocation. “We recognize the need to invest significantly in our coaches. We are working on plans to send coaches abroad to learn from other head coaches. Building up our local talent is essential,” Mazey added.
Currently, Tuwai is taking a break to spend quality time with his family. Fiji 7s head coach Osea Kolinisau has also voiced his support and encouraged Tuwai to pursue his coaching aspirations earnestly.
