The Fiji Rugby Union is poised to assist Jerry Tuwai, an Olympian and rugby sevens star, as he embarks on a coaching career. Tuwai revealed his intention to transition into coaching after Fiji’s silver medal performance in rugby sevens at the recent Olympic Games, marking the end of his playing days.
Although this symbolizes a concluding chapter for one of Fiji’s most talented sevens players, it also opens the door to a coaching realm that has seen limited Fijian presence and success. FRU interim chair Peter Mazey emphasized their commitment to providing Tuwai with the necessary training to help him succeed in this new role.
“Jerry is looking to move into coaching, which we fully support. He recognizes this transition, and we believe he has immense potential to contribute in a coaching capacity,” Mazey stated. He acknowledged that Tuwai has not yet undergone formal coaching training, emphasizing the need for structured learning to navigate this career path.
Mazey also highlighted the positive feedback received from Fiji 7s coaches and management following the Olympic reviews, focusing on Tuwai’s influence as a mentor. “His involvement had a notable impact, helping to turn around a streak of 22 tournament losses. His contributions led the team to earn a silver medal, which is remarkable.”
The FRU is also committed to upskilling local coaches, recognizing this as a vital area for development. “We understand the importance of investing in our coaches. We are developing plans to send local coaches abroad to gain experience with seasoned professionals, as this is an area that requires significant effort,” Mazey added.
Currently, Tuwai is taking time off the field to relax and enjoy moments with his family. Fiji 7s head coach Osea Kolinisau has shown his support for Tuwai, encouraging him to earnestly pursue his coaching aspirations.
