Fiji Rugby Union Backs Jerry Tuwai’s Coaching Aspirations

The Fiji Rugby Union is prepared to assist Olympian and rugby sevens star Jerry Tuwai as he embarks on his coaching career. Following the Fiji 7s team’s silver medal achievement at the recent Olympic Games, Tuwai announced his intention to transition into coaching as he steps away from playing.

While this marks the end of a significant chapter for one of Fiji’s standout sevens players, it also opens the door to a new opportunity in a field where only a few Fijians have thrived. FRU interim chair Peter Mazey stated that they are committed to providing Tuwai with the necessary training for his coaching journey.

“Jerry is looking to become a coach, and we fully support this decision as he moves toward retirement. He is a remarkable individual with much to offer the coaching realm,” Mazey remarked. He acknowledged that Tuwai has yet to receive formal training as a coach, pointing out that coaching involves various levels of expertise.

Mazey also mentioned the positive feedback from the Fiji 7s coaches and management regarding Tuwai’s influence as a mentor during the team’s recent Olympic campaign. “We will collaborate with Jerry because he brings valuable insights. His mentorship made a significant difference; the team transitioned from enduring 22 tournament losses to securing a silver medal with his guidance,” he noted.

The FRU is focusing on enhancing the skills of local coaches and plans to allocate substantial resources toward this goal. “We recognize the importance of investing in our coaches. We are working on arrangements to send coaches overseas to gain experience alongside established head coaches. This is a crucial area that requires considerable attention,” Mazey added.

Currently, Tuwai is enjoying some time off, spending quality moments with his family. Fiji 7s head coach Osea Kolinisau has also shown support, encouraging Tuwai to earnestly pursue his coaching aspirations.
