Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru has expressed concerns regarding the abrupt appointment of Koli Sewabu as the interim chief executive officer of the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU). This change was announced during a hastily arranged press conference where FRU board chairman John Sanday also revealed the resignation of former CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu, who stepped down for personal reasons.

Saukuru remarked that he was previously unaware of the leadership transition and emphasized the importance of adhering to the proper protocols during such organizational changes. He stated that the FRU is owned by the people of Fiji and that it is crucial for the board to operate transparently and within the law.

In light of the recent appointment, Sewabu assumes his role for a tenure of six months while continuing his responsibilities as the FRU’s rugby director. With a robust background in rugby, having previously coached at both provincial and national levels, Sewabu is expected to focus on essential areas such as cultural change, player development, and alignment with international standards.

Sewabu highlighted his intentions to build a rugby culture that resonates with Fijian values, aiming not only to enhance on-field performance but also to rebuild trust among the public and sponsors through commitment to transparency and cultural reform.

Sanday, while unable to comment extensively during the conference due to prior engagements, has voiced his gratitude towards Nayacalevu for his contributions during what was said to be a challenging period for the FRU.

The recent changes within the FRU suggest a renewed commitment to fostering growth and cohesion within the sport, responding proactively to both challenges and opportunities. The hope is that under Sewabu’s leadership, rugby in Fiji will not only thrive but also usher in a new era of success that reflects the rich heritage of the nation. There’s a strong sentiment that with effective strategies and a focus on core values, the future holds great promise for all involved in Fiji rugby.
