Fiji Rugby Under Fire: Corruption Allegations and Player Revolt

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka has expressed deep disappointment regarding the recent corruption allegations against the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) raised by overseas-based players. During an interview with SUNsports, Gavoka, who previously served as the chairman of the FRU, shared insights on the challenges faced by the board of directors and staff at Rugby House.

His comments come in response to an interview with former Flying Fijians captain Waisea Nayacalevu, who spoke to the Daily Mail about a potential boycott of last year’s Rugby World Cup quarter-final against England, citing unpaid bonuses and corruption within the FRU. Nayacalevu’s stance has garnered support from prominent players such as Semi Radradra, Levani Botia, Meli Derenalagi, Jiuta Wainiqolo, and Albert Tuisue, who have called for the removal of interim trustees and staff at the FRU.

Gavoka remarked that those involved in rugby are generally honorable individuals, noting that many serve as volunteers and do not receive compensation for their efforts. He expressed sadness over the accusations suggesting that the administration is to blame for the current issues.

The Deputy Prime Minister acknowledged the financial burdens associated with rugby in Fiji, which largely involves the iTaukei community, highlighting the lack of resources. He emphasized the aspiration to compete against top-tier teams like England and France, while recognizing the limitations that come from being a smaller nation.

Gavoka pointed out that the ongoing financial challenges faced by the FRU are well-known and affect the operational capacity of the organization. He underscored that sponsorship opportunities are limited due to Fiji’s small market size, despite recent support from companies like Fiji Water and Fiji Airways. He conveyed the stark reality that employees at the FRU often come to work uncertain of their pay.

Concluding his remarks, Gavoka reflected on the realities of leading the organization and empathized with the struggles of those working within the FRU.
