The Fiji Rugby Union has officially announced the selection of the SportsWorld Fiji Under-20 squad for the highly anticipated Oceania Rugby U20s Challenge set to take place from May 28 to June 7 at Prince Charles Park in Nadi.

Head coach Senirusi Seruvakula has assembled a competitive 28-man team, featuring 15 returning players from this year’s Super Rugby U20 Championship in New Zealand. As the defending champions, Fiji will face formidable opponents including Tonga, Canada, and Samoa in their title defense.

Seruvakula expressed strong confidence in the squad’s preparation, stating, “This squad blends experience with exciting new talent. We’ve had solid preparations and are focused on delivering strong performances on home soil.” This mix of seasoned players and newcomers is vital as it fortifies Fiji’s ongoing commitment to young talent development in rugby.

The U20 program not only aims for immediate tournament success but also plays a crucial role in the broader player development strategy for Fiji Rugby. Many of the players are expected to transition into the elite national squad, highlighting the importance of establishing robust foundations and high standards at this developmental level.

For upcoming fixtures, the team’s first match is against Tonga U20 on May 28, followed by games against Canada U20 on June 6 and Samoa U20 on June 7.

This initiative reflects Fiji’s commitment to cultivating a strong rugby culture, with the potential for long-term impact on the nation’s performance in international competitions. The enthusiasm surrounding this tournament showcases the rich sporting tradition of Fiji and its aspiration to excel on the world stage.

Fiji’s youth rugby trajectory remains promising, as the dedication of Seruvakula and the coaching team continues to nurture the next generation of talent. The Rugby Union’s focus on comprehensive player development indicates a hopeful outlook for the future of rugby in Fiji.
