In a significant move to enhance international collaborations in sports, the Fiji Rakavi Football Union Ltd (FRFUL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Qatar Rugby Federation. This agreement, which came into effect on June 11, 2025, is set to last for three years with the possibility of extension.

The chairman of Fiji Rugby Union, John Sanday, expressed his enthusiasm regarding the partnership, stating, “Partnering with Qatar opens new avenues for our players and coaches. We are excited about potential training camps, friendly matches, and shared commercial opportunities that will benefit rugby in Fiji.”

The signed MOU outlines plans for exchange delegations comprising coaches, referees, medical experts, and performance analysts, aimed at fostering development within both rugby communities. It also includes organizing international friendly matches and training camps for men’s and women’s teams across various age groups.

Additional areas of collaboration mentioned in the agreement include advancements in sports science, medicine, referee development programs, and exploring joint commercial ventures, particularly concerning rugby infrastructure projects. To oversee the implementation of the MOU, Fiji Rugby has established a joint committee that will finalize an annual program each September.

This partnership with Qatar is seen as a key milestone in the FRU’s broader strategy of establishing international alliances, reflecting the upward trajectory for rugby in Fiji. By enhancing training and development frameworks, the FRU aims to elevate the sport to new heights, ultimately benefiting the communities and players involved.

Reflecting on the wider context, the MOU’s signing comes on the heels of recent collaborations between the FRUF and other significant rugby entities, positioning Fiji as a growing hub of rugby excellence and international sports diplomacy. John Sanday also acknowledged the support of the Fiji Embassy Office and the Official Committee for Rugby and Hockey of Qatar in facilitating this partnership.

This initiative not only sets the stage for immediate benefits in terms of exchange of expertise but also carries the potential for long-term growth, inspiring future generations of rugby players in Fiji.
