Iliavi Masori is experiencing a momentous milestone as he rejoins the Fiji men’s rugby sevens training squad, fulfilling a dream he never thought would come true. Coming from Toge village in Ba, Masori is the younger brother of Jioji Nasove, a silver medalist in the Rugby Sevens at the Paris Olympic Games.
Expressing his gratitude, Masori revealed, “I never dreamt that I’ll be in the national sevens team and I’m thankful to my family for their massive support.” His journey to the national squad has not been without hurdles; after playing for the Dominion Brothers Under-21 squad, he faced setbacks due to injuries which initially saw him dropped from the training list. However, he remains optimistic and grateful for the opportunity to return.
“This is my second time, and I’m really happy about the training, even though it’s intense,” Masori stated, highlighting the joy of training alongside his brother Nasova. He emphasized his commitment to overcoming past challenges and pushing forward in his rugby career.
Masori has noted the differences in coaching styles between Ben Gollings and Osea Kolinisau, appreciating the nutritional advice Kolinisau provides. With hope in his heart, he aspires to make his debut at the upcoming Dubai Sevens tournament slated for November 30 to December 1. “If the opportunity is given, I’ll take it with both hands,” he declared confidently.
In parallel, the Fiji men’s sevens team is focused on claiming victory at the Dubai Sevens tournament, aiming to break a prolonged winless streak in the HSBC SVNS. Veteran player Suliano Volivoli shared their determination, stating, “We faced a lot of challenges, but we continue to persevere in our preparation.”
Volivoli noted that the team’s unity has improved, thanks to a blend of new and seasoned players who have been training together for three months. Head Coach Kolinisau often reminds his team that success begins with their efforts in training. As part of their preparations, the squad plans to compete at the Mataso tournament before heading to Dubai.
This story encapsulates resilience and hope for the future, highlighting not only individual dreams but also team ambitions. As Masori and his teammates prepare for the Dubai tournament, they are driven by their dedication and the unwavering support of their families and coaches. The upcoming tournament represents not just a chance at victory but also an opportunity for growth and unity within the team.
Overall, the narrative surrounding Masori and the Fiji sevens team illustrates the power of perseverance and collective aspiration, setting a positive tone as they approach their upcoming challenges.
