Fiji’s captain for the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France, Waisea Nayacalevu, has stated that he and other senior players are speaking out for the improvement of Fiji rugby, emphasizing that their concerns are not financially motivated. Nayacalevu, accompanied by teammates Levani Botia and Semi Radradra, shared their views on a popular social media podcast regarding allegations of mismanagement by the Fiji Rugby Union related to promised incentives since the World Cup.
Nayacalevu highlighted that the focus should be on the future of upcoming generations of Fiji rugby players rather than monetary issues. He expressed frustration that agreements regarding player payments before the World Cup remain unfulfilled, declaring that this ongoing problem has persisted for far too long.
“This paints a negative image, and it’s time to bring greater professionalism to the leadership of Fiji Rugby,” Nayacalevu stated.
Botia echoed Nayacalevu’s concerns, revealing that he, like many other players, has not received the promised $105,000 bonus, though they did receive a $30,000 salary in two payments before and after the tournament. “I have no idea where it went,” Botia remarked.
The senior players are now urging for a thorough investigation into the current situation.
