Fiji men’s sevens player Kavekini Tanivanuakula remains in the running for selection for the upcoming Perth 7s tournament, despite facing drink-driving charges. Head coach Osea Kolinisau confirmed Tanivanuakula’s involvement during a training session, stating that he has joined his teammates to prepare for the McDonalds Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament next week.
Tanivanuakula made his debut for the national team at the Dubai 7s last month and participated in the Cape Town leg of the tournament as well. He was arrested for alleged drink driving at the Nadi Temple checkpoint on December 14, and is set to appear in court on February 17, 2025.
Kolinisau highlighted the importance of responsibility, especially for a debutant like Tanivanuakula. He emphasized that representing Fiji brings significant responsibilities and that players become role models for the younger generation. The head coach expressed optimism about Tanivanuakula’s growth, noting positive changes in his behavior since the incident.
Kolinisau stressed the need for players to exemplify kindness and respect, reinforcing the idea that their conduct off the field is as important as their performance on it. The final team selection for the squad heading to Australia will occur after the three-day tournament, with the Perth 7s set to take place from January 24-26.
This situation reflects a valuable opportunity for Tanivanuakula to learn from past mistakes and grow as both an athlete and an individual. It serves as a reminder that everyone can overcome challenges and make positive changes in their lives. There is hope that he will not only succeed on the field but also inspire others with his journey of redemption and responsibility.
