Fiji men’s sevens forward Kavekini Tanivanuakula, despite facing charges for drink driving, remains a candidate for selection in the upcoming Perth 7s tournament scheduled for later this month. Head coach Osea Kolinisau made this announcement during a recent training session with the squad.
Tanivanuakula, who is preparing alongside his teammates for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament next week, made his debut for the national team at the Dubai 7s last month and also participated in the Cape Town leg. He was arrested for the alleged offense at the Nadi Temple checkpoint on December 14 and is set to appear in court on February 17, 2025.
Coach Kolinisau expressed the importance of decision-making, especially for a newcomer like Tanivanuakula, acknowledging the responsibility that comes with representing Fiji. He stated that he has noticed a positive shift in Tanivanuakula’s attitude and behavior since the incident, highlighting the role that players must embrace as role models for younger fans.
Kolinisau emphasized the team’s commitment to kindness and respect, underscoring their aim to set a positive example. The final squad for the Australia trip, which will take place after the three-day Coral Coast 7s tournament, will be announced soon. The Perth 7s is scheduled to occur from January 24-26.
This situation showcases an important moment for Tanivanuakula where he can learn and grow from a difficult experience, potentially becoming a stronger athlete and role model in the long run. His journey reflects all athletes’ capacity for redemption, fostering hope for those facing challenges.
