Fiji’s men’s rugby sevens coach Osea Kolinisau is excited to welcome Isikeli Basiyalo and Aisea Nawai, two promising development players from the Fijian Drua, into the expanded squad for the upcoming Hong Kong Sevens tournament, set to take place from March 28-30. Both Basiyalo and Nawai previously showcased their talent as part of last year’s Fiji Under-20 team, and Kolinisau has been in communication with Drua coach Glen Jackson about their potential roles in the squad.
Kolinisau has acknowledged the significant power and speed that the young athletes offer, yet he clarified that their positions on the team are not guaranteed. He stated, “We’ll have a look at them to see if they fit in. They’ll both fight for their position, and if they prove themselves, I won’t hesitate in selecting them.” Additionally, Apete Narogo, recognized as the best player at the recent Nahehevia Sevens tournament, is also under consideration for the final lineup.
With three weeks of preparation ahead of the tournament, Kolinisau is focused on evaluating the new talent while identifying areas where the team can improve. He noted that some players are sidelined due to injuries or minor illnesses, including Ilikimi Torosi, who was injured in a match against South Africa. Despite these challenges, Kolinisau is optimistic about having a fully fit squad ready by next week.
The inclusion of new talent highlights Fiji’s commitment to fostering its rugby culture and provides an encouraging perspective for the team’s future endeavors on the international stage. The anticipation surrounding these young athletes reflects the hope that they will uphold and enhance Fiji’s esteemed rugby legacy as they face tough competitors at the Hong Kong Sevens. Fans can take pride in the team’s ability to blend fresh talent with experienced players, promising an exciting tournament ahead.
