Fiji Rugby Sevens Star Jerry Tuwai Retires: A Glittering Legacy

The illustrious rugby career of Fiji men’s rugby sevens captain Jerry Tuwai has officially concluded.

The 35-year-old announced his retirement yesterday, just hours after leading the Fiji team to secure a silver medal at the Paris Olympic Games held at the Stade de France.

Throughout his career, Tuwai amassed two Olympic gold medals, a silver medal, and a Rugby World Cup Sevens title. He was also honored as the World Rugby Sevens Player of the Decade.

Reflecting on his achievements, Tuwai noted, “First gold in Rio (Olympics) with the now coach Osea Kolinisau, then 2020 was a blessing with another gold. To be here in Paris 2024 is indeed a blessing.”

Commenting on their 28-7 loss to France in the Gold Medal final, Tuwai acknowledged that they anticipated a tough match, particularly as France played in front of their home crowd. France had been training in Fiji to prepare for the Games, including sessions at the Sigatoka sand dunes and friendly matches against the Fiji training squad at Sigatoka’s Lawaqa Park.

Looking ahead, Tuwai expressed no plans to continue playing but showed gratitude for representing his country on the global stage. When asked about his future plans, Tuwai mentioned, “I think I’ll go into coaching, maybe help the old man (Osea Kolinisau) in the future.”
