The Fiji men’s rugby sevens team is gearing up for the highly anticipated Hong Kong Sevens this weekend, with head coach Osea Kolinisau reaffirming their objective to win the 2024/25 HSBC SVNS Series. In a press conference on Wednesday, Kolinisau expressed confidence in his squad, stating, “At the start of the season our aim was to win the series. I told the boys we are building but I want us to win the series. That was our goal and it’s still our goal.”
The team is poised to capitalize on two crucial tournaments, Singapore and Hong Kong, which they view as significant opportunities for success. Kolinisau highlighted the team’s promising prospects, particularly with winger Jioji Nasova leading the series with 16 tries, showcasing the depth of talent within the squad.
Similarly, the Fijiana sevens head coach, Richard Walker, is urging his players to embrace their skills fully as they pursue their first series title. The excitement and pressures of these tournaments amplify the competitive spirit, as teams face off against formidable opponents like the USA, Ireland, and Argentina.
Reflecting on Fiji’s rich history in the Hong Kong Sevens, where they have previously claimed 19 titles, the current squad aims to reignite that winning tradition. Kolinisau emphasized the importance of teamwork and shoring up defensive and offensive strategies, particularly in high-pressure situations—a lesson learned from their recent close matches.
Fans remain optimistic, eagerly anticipating how the team will merge its storied past with the fresh energy of new players. As Fiji approaches this critical juncture, their commitment to improvement and resilience shines through, fostering hope for a strong showing in the upcoming tournaments.
