Fiji Rugby Sevens Legend Hangs Up Boots: A Dazzling Career in Review

Fiji men’s rugby sevens captain Jerry Tuwai has officially announced his retirement, concluding his remarkable career. The 35-year-old made the announcement shortly after leading Fiji to secure a silver medal at the Paris Olympic Games at Stade de France.

Tuwai’s illustrious career includes two Olympic gold medals, a silver medal, and a Rugby World Cup Sevens title. He was also honored as the World Rugby Sevens Player of the Decade.

Reflecting on his achievements, Tuwai said, “First gold in Rio (Olympics) with the now coach Osea Kolinisau. Then 2020 was a blessing with another gold, and to be here in Paris 2024 is a blessing indeed.”

Discussing their 28-7 loss to France in the Gold Medal final, Tuwai acknowledged the challenges of facing a team playing in front of their home crowd. France had been preparing for the Olympic Games by training in Fiji, including sessions at the Sigatoka sand dunes and matches against the Fiji training squad at Sigatoka’s Lawaqa Park.

Looking to the future, Tuwai expressed uncertainty about continuing as a player but showed gratitude for representing Fiji on the global stage. When asked about future endeavors, Tuwai mentioned a possible transition to coaching, saying, “I think I’ll go into coaching, maybe help the old man (Osea Kolinisau) in the future.”
