Sam Matavesi, the hooker for the Flying Fijians at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, expressed that the team’s main desire is to wear the national jersey and represent Fiji, whether it’s during a World Cup quarterfinal or a match against Georgia in Spain. In a recent social media message, Matavesi emphasized the importance of representing the country and its people.
He noted that the players have never demanded excessive pay, but rather sought compensation that aligns with global standards. Matavesi mentioned that the senior players fought for pay increases in both 2019 and 2023 and highlighted that their main request has always been to receive their agreed payments on time.
He explained that the situation had reached a point where players had to formally inform the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) of their serious intent to strike during a World Cup quarterfinal just to receive their entitled dues. Matavesi called for significant changes within the FRU, suggesting that the organization should support both players and management, creating a unified goal of winning.
With his experience in Fiji’s rugby scene, Matavesi lamented that ongoing issues have become a regular occurrence in every camp. He credited fellow players like Wyse, Semi, and Bots for their efforts, warning that without change, Fiji might only tap into a fraction of its potential both now and in the future.
He concluded by reiterating the need for change within the rugby framework.
