Sam Matavesi, the hooker for the Flying Fijians at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, expressed the team’s dedication to representing Fiji, whether in a quarterfinal match or in a game against Georgia in Spain. In a recent social media post, Matavesi emphasized the importance of wearing the national jersey and honoring their country.
He pointed out that the players are not asking for excessive compensation but simply wish to receive timely payments that reflect what was previously agreed upon. Matavesi noted that the senior players fought hard for a pay increase in 2019 and again in 2023, but they have never demanded more than what was contractually promised.
Highlighting the seriousness of the situation, he mentioned that the players even considered striking during a key quarterfinal match to ensure they received the payments owed to them. He called for significant changes within the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU), suggesting that a supportive board focused on player and management development could lead to greater success.
Matavesi, who has been involved with the Fijian team for some time, expressed concern that issues like these have become a recurring theme in every training camp. He acknowledged the efforts of players like Wyse, Semi, and Bots in advocating for fair treatment and improving conditions for their peers. He concluded with a strong message advocating for necessary changes within the organization.
