Fiji Rugby has announced the appointment of Talemo Waqa as the Acting Chief Operations Officer, effective immediately. This decision aims to reinforce the operational framework and long-term strategy of the union during a pivotal period of growth.

Waqa is recognized as a highly esteemed sports administrator, boasting over 30 years of experience that encompasses sports management, education, and high-performance consultancy. His return to a senior leadership role is expected to provide a timely boost for the organization.

Notably, Waqa is familiar with Fiji Rugby, having previously managed the High Performance Unit and played a significant role in promoting rugby development across Fiji and the wider Pacific region. He served for 13 years as Regional Training Manager with Oceania Rugby, where he was instrumental in establishing high-performance systems and advancing the sport throughout the region.

His extensive background in elite performance frameworks, governance, and organizational development positions him well to manage the day-to-day operations of Fiji Rugby and bolster the sport’s growth domestically and internationally.

Chief Executive Officer Koli Sewabu expressed enthusiasm regarding Waqa’s appointment, citing his deep understanding of high-performance sports, governance, and the unique culture of Fiji Rugby as vital assets that will enhance guidance for the organization.

In addition to his role at Fiji Rugby, Waqa is the founder and managing director of Kiliati Enterprise, a firm specializing in sports management and high-performance consultancy. He still contributes to Oceania Rugby under World Rugby, facilitating leadership, management, and coaching programs throughout the Pacific.

Waqa’s past senior roles within Fiji Rugby include positions in rugby development and refereeing. He has also spent over two decades in the education sector as both a teacher and administrator.

As Acting COO, Waqa will oversee all operational functions of Fiji Rugby, prioritizing efficiency, innovation, and sustainable growth. His leadership is anticipated to enhance alignment with the union’s strategic goals, particularly concerning player welfare, community involvement, and enhancing Fiji’s presence in both XVs and Sevens rugby.

Waqa’s appointment underscores Fiji Rugby’s ongoing dedication to robust governance, high-performance standards, and the long-term evolution of the sport as it prepares for its next chapter on the international arena. This positive development reflects a commitment to nurturing talent and elevating Fiji’s rugby legacy.
