Fiji rugby legend Joeli Veitayaki dies unexpectedly, tributes pour in

Former Fiji rugby player Joeli Veitayaki has passed away unexpectedly in New Zealand, leaving a significant void in the hearts of many. His family announced the news, and tributes have since poured in from across the rugby community and beyond.

Hailing from Yaroi Village in Matuku, Veitayaki was celebrated as a legend, embodying resilience, humility, and love. His nephew, Buka Sokovagone, shared an emotional tribute on social media, highlighting his uncle’s journey from local island rugby to the international stage. “You wore the white jersey with honor, reminding us of what it means to be Fijian. You were a warrior, a mentor, a father, and a beacon of hope,” Sokovagone expressed.

Veitayaki’s impactful rugby career spanned from 1994 to 2003, during which he amassed 49 caps for the Fiji national team. His beginnings were rooted in the Island Zone competition with Matuku, leading to significant stints with the Sain John’s-Marist Club and Police, eventually representing Suva. He also found success in New Zealand, playing for King Country, Northland, the Chiefs, and the Blues in Super Rugby. He concluded his career at Ulster in Ireland.

The news of Veitayaki’s passing is reminiscent of the loss felt throughout the Fijian rugby community, which has recently mourned other beloved figures, including Josaia Raisuqe and Ilaitia Tuisese. Each of these individuals has left a substantial legacy, not just in terms of their contributions to the sport, but also in the lives they touched. As the community reflects on these losses, they find solidarity in honoring the memory and impact of such players.

Veitayaki’s son, Haereiti Hetet, currently represents Fiji, ensuring that his father’s legacy in rugby will continue to inspire future generations. While the sadness surrounding his passing lingers, the support and admiration from fans and fellow players underscore a strong sense of unity within the rugby family as they prepare to celebrate his life and accomplishments. Details regarding funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
