The Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) is actively pursuing the opportunity to host a Test match in Fiji on October 10, 2025, as part of the preparations for the upcoming Pacific Bowl Championship. Head coach Wise Kativerata expressed his enthusiasm for this initiative, highlighting the significance of holding the match during the Fiji Day celebrations.

Kativerata noted that discussions are ongoing with two nations to finalize the participation of teams. He highlighted recent events that have positively impacted FNRL, such as the successful pre-season National Rugby League (NRL) match between the Newcastle Knights and the Melbourne Storm held at Lautoka’s Churchill Park. Additionally, the Pacific Bowl Championship, which took place in Suva, has also served as a boost for the sport.

Looking ahead to 2025, FNRL has ambitious plans, including the establishment of an academy for ages 14 to 18 throughout Fiji, with a focus on engaging schools and local players, particularly from islands like Vanua Levu. This effort aims to create a clear pathway for young athletes, especially in light of the upcoming 2028 World Cup.

Kativerata emphasized the importance of reshaping young players’ mindsets, underlining that success in rugby league takes time and effort. He expressed his hope for the Melbourne Storm to play more matches in Fiji in the near future.

In light of recent legal developments, Kativerata also indicated that former West Tigers halfback Brandon Wakeham could still be included in the Fiji Bati squad. Wakeham’s alleged drug charges were dropped, and if he demonstrates strong performance in the NRL, he may be considered for selection as FNRL aims to build a solid team for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.

This proactive approach by FNRL not only prepares the team for future competitions but also highlights their commitment to nurturing local talent, fostering community engagement with rugby, and providing opportunities for young Fijians. With their forward-looking plans, FNRL is setting a positive trajectory for the sport in Fiji.
