The Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) is currently engaged in discussions to host an international Test match in Fiji on October 10, 2025, serving as a warm-up for the upcoming Pacific Bowl Championship. Wise Kativerata, the head coach of Fiji Bati, stated that this event could coincide with the Fiji Day celebrations.

In addition to the Test match, Kativerata highlighted notable events from this year, such as the successful pre-season National Rugby League (NRL) match between the Newcastle Knights and the Melbourne Storm, which took place at Lautoka’s Churchill Park on February 24. He also emphasized the positive impact of hosting the Pacific Bowl Championship in Suva two months ago.

Looking ahead to 2025, FNRL plans to establish an academy for players aged 14 to 18 across Fiji, aiming to cultivate talent from various regions, including Vanua Levu. Kativerata mentioned additional initiatives to educate young players and reshape their mindsets as they strive towards the 2028 sporting goals.

Furthermore, the coach indicated that Brandon Wakeham, a former West Tigers halfback, remains eligible for selection in the Fiji Bati squad, following the dismissal of drug charges against him. Kativerata expressed that Wakeham’s performance in competitive football will be crucial in determining his role as they build a core team leading into the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.

These developments signify a robust effort to elevate Rugby League in Fiji and strengthen the foundations for future international competitions.

In summary, the FNRL is actively planning future events and youth programs to enhance Rugby League in Fiji while navigating player eligibility concerns, which reflects a commitment to the sport’s growth and community engagement. The aspiration to bring more games to Fiji, particularly from renowned teams like the Melbourne Storm, adds an optimistic outlook for the rugby landscape in the region.
