Fiji Rugby League Builds NRL-Standard Pathways to Grow Talent

Vodafone Fiji Bati head coach Wise Kativerata has openly discussed the hurdles faced by Fiji’s rugby league system, notably regarding the development of player pathways, which he believes are vital for the ongoing success of the national team. After Fiji’s defeat to Papua New Guinea, with a score of 50-18 in the Pacific Bowl Championship final, Kativerata reflected on the nation’s ability to foster elite players such as Semi Valemei, Semi Radradra, Viliame Kikau, and Noa Nadruku, despite the current lack of a structured player development system.

Contrasting Fiji’s situation with countries like Papua New Guinea, which boasts established programs such as the Hunters, Kativerata emphasized that Fiji is just beginning to solidify its player development structure. He expressed optimism about recent strides taken over the past two years to construct a sustainable pathway that aligns with NRL standards. This move is essential in ensuring that young Fijian players possess the necessary support and opportunities to grow within the sport.

Kativerata remarked, “I don’t know how we do it, but fortunately, Papua New Guinea has a pathway already with Hunters. We have started working on this in the last two years, putting together a system that can be recognized in the NRL.” He stressed that creating clear pathways will enable young Fijian players to gain valuable experience and exposure, essential for competing consistently on the international stage.
