Today marks a significant turning point for Fiji Rugby, as the future direction of the sport in the country hinges on the outcomes of the Annual General Meeting (AGM) taking place at the Grand Pacific Hotel. A record 25 candidates are contending for seven positions on the Board of Directors, reflecting both the enthusiasm to contribute and the underlying concerns about the state and future of Fiji Rugby.
Jeremy Duxbury, the Treasurer of Ba Rugby, expressed astonishment at the high number of contenders, noting that it is an unprecedented occurrence in his 25 years of involvement. This level of interest underscores the urgent need for reform and renewed vision within the sport’s governance structure.
Following the resignation of the previous Board in April 2023, five government-appointed Interim Trustees have managed rugby operations. The elections today are vital, as the new board members will need to address several pressing issues and have a profound impact on the operational and strategic direction of Fiji Rugby.
Among the nominees are Mark Evans, the CEO of Drua, and Semi Lotawa, the Head of Philanthropy at Fiji Water, both nominated for commercial roles. Their extensive rugby backgrounds combined with business acumen are seen as crucial to reviving the sport. Additionally, the nomination of Vilimoni Delasau, a former professional rugby player and coach, alongside Ana Tuiketei for legal affairs, further emphasizes the focus on appointing individuals with deep experience in rugby and governance.
The Ba Rugby Union aims to address several critical issues during this AGM, including plans for the 2025 playing season and the autonomy for member unions to choose their own uniform manufacturers. There is a proactive spirit among the representatives, reflecting a strong desire to rejuvenate the sport and overcome the challenges faced by smaller unions.
