The Fiji men’s rugby sevens team has ended a long drought of 22 tournaments without a victory by triumphing in Dubai last weekend. Their focus now shifts to securing additional titles in the HSBC SVNS Series. Head coach Osea Kolinisau emphasizes the team’s need for consistency and the importance of challenging for every title available.

This weekend, the Fijian men will compete in Pool A against formidable opponents Great Britain and Uruguay. Led by captain Jeremaia Matana, the team aims to finish the year strong and secure the top position in the series points table.

Currently, Fiji is leading with 20 points, closely followed by Spain at 18, Argentina at 16, and New Zealand at 14. Great Britain and Uruguay trail behind, sitting at eighth and ninth places with six and four points, respectively. Kolinisau acknowledged the competitive nature of the series, stating that no team can be taken lightly this weekend.

On the other hand, the Fijiana women’s rugby sevens team seeks to achieve their first victory in the series after a disappointing run in Dubai. Coached by Timoci Volavola, they will face challenges this weekend as they are placed in Pool D alongside Great Britain and the United States.

In a related note, South Africa’s Donavan Don is optimistic about the upcoming Cape Town SVNS tournament, despite the Blitzboks finishing sixth in Dubai. He believes that the new tournament format will enhance the competition, and the time spent together as a team will contribute positively to their performance.

This is an exciting time for Fijian rugby, with both the men’s and women’s teams looking to make their marks in the series. The passion and determination shown by the athletes reflect their commitment to rugby excellence and the hope that greater successes lie ahead.

In summary, the Fiji men’s team aims to build on their recent victory, while the women’s team is eager for a fresh start. This weekend’s matches promise high-stakes competition that could further enhance Fiji’s reputation in the rugby sevens arena.
