Today marks a pivotal moment for Fiji Rugby, as the results of the elections for the Board of Directors are set to be determined at the Fiji Rugby Union’s Annual General Meeting in the Grand Pacific Hotel. With an impressive total of 25 candidates vying for seven Board positions, the level of interest and commitment to Fiji Rugby’s future is unprecedented.
According to Jeremy Duxbury, Treasurer of Ba Rugby, this surge in candidates reflects both enthusiasm and concern within the provincial unions. “In 25 years of involvement, I can’t recall so many candidates wanting to stand,” he noted, highlighting the exceptional nature of this election.
The recent resignation of the previous Board in April 2023 paved the way for five government-appointed Interim Trustees to manage rugby affairs, creating an urgent need for capable leadership. Among the candidates, two individuals from the commercial sector have been nominated: Mark Evans, the CEO of Drua, and Semi Lotawa, Fiji Water’s Head of Philanthropy. BRU Secretary Gaby Kautoga expressed confidence in their abilities, emphasizing the importance of solid rugby backgrounds combined with business acumen.
Additionally, Vilimoni Delasau has been nominated for a Rugby Director position, while Ana Tuiketei is in the running for Legal Director. Kautoga praised Delasau’s extensive experience as a player and coach, and Tuiketei’s strong grasp of legal matters and her ability to engage with provincial members effectively.
The AGM will also seek to address other significant issues, including the playing season for 2025 and the autonomy of member unions regarding uniform manufacturing. Kautoga expressed eagerness to move past a year of uncertainty and focus on progress.
Overall, the enthusiasm surrounding the Board elections indicates a strong commitment to revitalizing and shaping Fiji Rugby’s future. There is hope that this new leadership will tackle existing challenges and harness the passion of the rugby community for positive outcomes ahead.
Fiji Rugby stands at a crossroads, with the potential for revitalization and growth through thoughtful leadership and collaboration.
