Today marks a pivotal moment for the future of Fiji Rugby as the Board of Directors elections at the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) Annual General Meeting (AGM) take center stage. A remarkable 25 candidates are vying for seven positions, reflecting a significant interest in the sport’s governance. Jeremy Duxbury, Treasurer of Ba Rugby, emphasized the unprecedented nature of this candidate pool, indicating a strong engagement among rugby stakeholders.
The urgency for change in leadership stems from the resignation of the previous Board in April 2023, which has led to an interim management by five government-appointed trustees. Among the candidates, two individuals from the commercial sector stand out: Mark Evans, CEO of Drua, and Semi Lotawa, head of philanthropy at Fiji Water. Their nominations signal a desire for expertise in both rugby and business, which is critical for navigating the challenges facing Fiji Rugby.
Ba Rugby has also put forward Vilimoni Delasau, a former professional rugby player and coach, for a Rugby Director position, along with Ana Tuiketei, targeted for the Legal Director role. Their combined experience and passion for the sport offer hope for a forward-thinking approach to governance. This perspective taps into the concerns expressed by provincial unions regarding the trajectory of Fiji Rugby.
In addition to the elections, there are pressing matters on the agenda, such as the planning for the 2025 playing season and the right of member unions to select their uniform manufacturers. The anticipated discussions aim to address key issues that will allow the sport to move forward and thrive in a highly competitive landscape.
As Fiji Rugby stands at this crossroads, the involvement of so many candidates serves as a positive indication of the community’s commitment to the sport. With a focus on experienced leaders who understand both the rugby framework and the financial realities of the sport, there’s a real potential for revitalization and positive change in Fiji Rugby’s future.
This AGM could be a turning point, as it represents an opportunity to align the organization’s vision with the aspirations of its members, paving the way for a stronger and more unified rugby community.
