The vision to enhance Fiji Rugby’s competitive future is gaining momentum through the prospect of more Test matches for the Flying Fijians and their anticipated inclusion in the 2026 Nations Cup. This was highlighted by Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne as he assessed the team’s performances and results from the past year’s Test matches.
The Flying Fijians achieved a commendable success rate, winning seven out of ten Tests this year. Byrne believes that increased opportunities to compete against top-tier teams will help bridge the gap between Fiji and the elite Tier 1 rugby nations.
Reflecting on the team’s encounters with world-class teams such as the All Blacks, Ireland, and Scotland, Byrne noted the lessons learned from these tough matches. “We got beaten by the All Blacks, Ireland, and Scotland, which are among the top teams in the world. Competing with them highlighted areas where we need to grow,” he stated.
While Fiji’s triumphs in the Pacific Nations Cup and against Georgia were noteworthy, Byrne acknowledged that facing stronger opponents illuminated certain shortcomings that he aims to address in preparation for the next season.
Byrne is optimistic about the future, particularly the potential participation in the 2026 Nations Cup. He mentioned, “We are looking forward to hopefully securing a couple of good matches next year, including the Pacific Nations Cup, and we’re currently waiting to finalize our opponents for the November Tour.”
Fiji and Japan are projected to be among the six Southern Hemisphere teams competing against Six Nations sides in the new tournament, with London being a favored host city for the event.
In summary, increased competitive exposure and upcoming opportunities for the Flying Fijians could lead to significant growth and development for Fiji Rugby. With a focus on improvement and a positive outlook toward future competitions, the foundation for success is being laid. As the team continues to evolve, fans can look forward to an exciting journey ahead.
