Waisea Mataitoga, the former manager of the SportsWorld Fiji Under-20 team and a key figure in Fijian rugby, has passed away at the age of 42. His death occurred on Sunday, marking a significant loss for the Fiji Rugby community.
Mataitoga’s contributions to the sport were notable, particularly during his brief tenure as the manager of the Fijiana 7s team at the end of 2022 through 2023. He worked closely with former Fijiana sevens head coach Saiasi Fuli, who remembered him as a passionate individual who brought joy and laughter to those around him. Fuli emphasized Mataitoga’s dedication to his work, stating that he would be greatly missed by his peers.
In addition to his managerial roles, Mataitoga was an essential part of the Fiji Rugby development program and held the distinction of managing the victorious Vodafone Deans Queen Victoria School U18 team. In recognition of his impact on the sport, Fiji Rugby staff, board members, and several Under-20 players gathered to pay their respects through traditional ceremonies on Sunday.
The Fiji Rugby Union expressed deep condolences to Mataitoga’s family and friends, reflecting on the profound sense of loss felt throughout the rugby community and beyond. Mataitoga will be laid to rest in his village of Nawaikama, Gau, Lomaiviti, alongside his older brother who passed away just a week prior.
