Fijian Drua CEO Mark Evans asserts that the next ten days will be pivotal for the future of rugby in Fiji. This Saturday, provincial unions and affiliated organizations will cast their votes for the newly formed Fiji Rakavi Football Union Ltd Board, which will take over the governance of the sport from the previous Fiji Rugby Union Board.
Evans recently launched the Drua Academy program and emphasized the importance of the upcoming election at the annual general meeting. The new constitution promises equal voting rights for all provincial unions and associations, giving them a significant role in guiding the organization’s leadership and strategic direction.
In the following week, a crucial election for the new chair and Executive Committee of World Rugby will take place, which is expected to have a significant impact on Fijian rugby. Evans expressed optimism that the new leadership of World Rugby will support Fiji’s bid to participate in the Nations Cup starting in 2026. Participation in this competition would increase matches against Tier 1 nations both at home and abroad, allowing Fiji Rugby to revamp its business model and enhance financial stability. This, in turn, would enable more investment in grassroots development and ongoing support for national teams.
Evans believes that if these efforts are successful, the outcomes of this week could be viewed as a transformative moment in Fiji’s rugby journey. Although he refrained from commenting on his status regarding a nomination for a Board Director position on the new board, reports suggest he has received nominations from several leading provincial unions.
The significant elections for the FRFU Ltd Board are scheduled for this Saturday in Suva, guided by the new constitution endorsed by local rugby unions and World Rugby.
Overall, this period presents a hopeful opportunity for the growth and development of rugby in Fiji, and the actions taken in these upcoming days could lead to enhanced prospects for the sport in the coming years.
