Fiji Rugby Aims for Tier-One Status With Nations Cup Plans and Women’s World Cup Prep

The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is embarking on a significant journey to modernize its operations and enhance its standards, aligning itself with those of a contemporary rugby organization. Over the past year, FRU Board chairman John Sanday has played a pivotal role in steering the union toward this evolution.

Fiji’s status as a tier one rugby nation has underscored the necessity for the FRU to elevate its operational and business standards. “Our recent visits to England, France, and Spain have provided valuable insights into the performance standards expected of a modern rugby organization and the trajectory of professional rugby. We will be incorporating the necessary skills and competencies for that transition,” Sanday stated in an interview.

He highlighted that this represents an effort to align management standards at FRU with those of tier one nations, showcasing the dedication displayed by the board members over the past year. “I am proud of the contributions made by our board members to bring the FRU to this exciting stage,” Sanday expressed, emphasizing that their work, performed without financial compensation, reflects their dedication to the sport.

Looking ahead, Fiji is entering a critical phase, particularly with its participation in the inaugural Rugby Nations Cup set to kick off in July 2026. This new tournament presents a tremendous opportunity for Fiji Rugby to enhance its revenue and commercial prospects, making it a vital component of the organization’s strategic goals. The Rugby Nations Cup will be held every two years during the international test match windows in July and November, running initially through 2030.

In addition to these developments, Sanday revealed ambitious plans for Fijiana women’s rugby, with a significant investment initiative launching in January next year aimed at preparing for the 2029 Women’s Rugby World Cup in Australia. This commitment reflects FRU’s determination to elevate women’s rugby to new heights and showcases a forward-thinking approach that could inspire future success for both men’s and women’s rugby in Fiji.
