The Fiji Police Force has enhanced its border surveillance by implementing a new yacht tracking system, aimed at improving the monitoring of vessels navigating through Fiji’s waters. Assistant Commissioner of Police Lutunauga highlighted that this initiative is part of a broader effort to leverage technology to bolster national security, in collaboration with the Fiji Revenue and Customs and other border enforcement agencies.

Lutunauga emphasized that the introduction of the yacht tracking system is a vital advancement that will enable authorities to closely monitor the movements and cargo of yachts, aiding in the detection of suspicious activities and the prevention of illegal operations. This initiative is positioned as one of several innovative steps being undertaken to improve maritime oversight through joint efforts with Customs.

Further, he pointed out that border security is not solely a national concern but also a regional and international issue. “We collaborate closely with customs, regional police forces, and international partners through intelligence sharing and joint operations. Criminal networks often exploit gaps between borders, making it essential for us to work together to enhance our capabilities in detecting and dismantling such organizations,” Lutunauga stated.

Reinforcing the police’s dedication to public safety, the Assistant Commissioner noted that officers nationwide are on constant alert, utilizing intelligence-led operations to track, disrupt, and dismantle criminal networks. The overarching goal is to protect Fiji and ensure that communities remain safeguarded against the threats posed by organized crime.

The introduction of the yacht tracking system is part of a comprehensive strategy to modernize border security through advanced technology, strengthen collaboration among agencies, and enhance intelligence-led policing to further deter illegal activities within Fiji’s maritime zone. This proactive approach reflects a commitment to creating a safer environment for all citizens and maintaining the integrity of Fiji’s borders.
