Remote and maritime communities in Fiji are set to experience significant improvements in access to education, healthcare, financial services, and social connectivity due to expanded digital networks. The Telecommunications Authority of Fiji (TAF) has solidified this initiative by signing Universal Service Obligation contracts with Digicel Fiji and Telecom Fiji Limited.
According to TAF Chairman David Eyre, these agreements signify a pivotal shift from policy formation to actual service delivery. Eyre emphasized that this development will allow Fijians in underserved regions to tap into digital markets and services that were previously inaccessible, thereby opening new opportunities.
Minister for Policing and Communications Ioane Naivalurua described the project as a crucial element of the National Digital Strategy. Under this initiative, Digicel Fiji will connect 33 communities in Lau Province, impacting over 3,200 residents. Meanwhile, Telecom Fiji Limited will enhance service in 30 communities across Lomaiviti, Namosi, and Navosa, benefiting more than 2,600 individuals.
The overarching aim of this program is to reach a total of 240 communities and service 23,000 Fijians nationwide. The services will employ satellite-based managed Wi-Fi centers, offering affordable data vouchers to users.
The first phase of the project will concentrate on 126 sites and is set to commence in the first week of January, with expectations to assist approximately 11,000 people. Both Digicel and Telecom Fiji Limited have stated that the initiative transcends mere technological advancements, emphasizing equity, opportunity, and lasting impacts within communities.
TAF will oversee the project to ensure transparency, accountability, and effective results for the people of Fiji, marking a hopeful step forward in bridging the digital divide for many underserved communities.
