The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation has unveiled the next phase of the Na Vualiku Tourism Development Program, with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, presenting the details in Parliament. This upcoming stage introduces a pilot grants program aimed at supporting Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) alongside community-based tourism groups.
The official launch is scheduled for December 11 in Labasa and Savusavu, followed by a session in Taveuni on December 12. The initiative is designed to empower small tourism operators in Vanua Levu and Taveuni, providing them with crucial financial assistance and practical training. These operators play a vital role in their communities, including mat weavers, eco-guides, small guesthouse owners, and cultural groups that contribute to the rich heritage shared with visitors.
Significant aspects of the program involve a transparent and accountable grants process, the establishment of stronger connections between enhanced infrastructure and income-generating opportunities, and guidance aligned with the Integrated Tourism Master Plan. The development of this program reflects the input gathered from the Northern Division community during previous consultations.
DPM Gavoka urged local communities to engage actively and prepare their Expressions of Interest before the launch. He emphasized that applications will open in December and reassured that the process will be fair and transparent. This is a unique opportunity for local businesses to submit ideas that showcase their culture, environment, and skills.
Additionally, the program will offer training and advisory support to enable applicants to craft strong proposals. This initiative places a strong emphasis on putting people at the core of tourism development, fostering opportunities for families and communities, and driving sustainable growth in the northern regions.
With the upcoming launch events at the end of this year, local operators have a significant opportunity to advance their businesses and enhance their contributions to the tourism sector, potentially leading to vibrant economic growth in the area.
