Fiji Rolls Out National Roads Plan Aiming to Transform Rural Corridors

The Fijian government is actively working on a National Roads Plan aimed at enhancing its road infrastructure development with a more structured and strategic approach. During a recent Town Hall meeting in Tavua, Minister for Public Works, Transport and Meteorological Services Ro Filipe Tuisawau emphasized that the plan is to detail the country’s infrastructure priorities, financing needs, and implementation strategies.

Ro Filipe stated that a finalized plan will enable the government to guide development systematically, ensuring that roads remain a significant priority. He highlighted the necessity of proper financial planning and prioritization to facilitate long-term and sustainable progress in road infrastructure.

This recent initiative aligns with the government’s ongoing commitment to improving essential services and infrastructure, particularly focusing on rural and maritime roads that require urgent attention. In light of earlier challenges faced by the Fiji Roads Authority over funding and delayed maintenance, Ro Filipe mentioned that steps are underway to collaborate closely with the authority and the Public Works Department to enhance rural road conditions. The allocation of the recent $338.8 million budget is directed towards these essential maintenance and construction projects, ensuring that roads and public transport systems are well-maintained and improved.

Additionally, the government plans to expand key roads, such as those in the Suva-Nausori corridor, to alleviate persistent traffic congestion.
