Fiji’s Water Authority (WAF) is rolling out its first smart water metering project to tackle non-revenue water, which currently stands at 47%. The program will upgrade the urban and potentially regional network by replacing aging meters with Itron mechanical meters equipped with Cyble communication modules. Data collection will be handled through Itron’s cloud-based Temetra system, eliminating the need for manual readings and enabling real-time monitoring.

The upgrade is intended to boost network reliability, improve billing accuracy, and support better leak detection and water loss reduction. WAF says the initiative represents a major step toward a more efficient and financially sustainable water system. The project began in May and is expected to be completed by the third quarter of the year. The Cyble modules are designed to withstand Fiji’s coastal environment, including salt spray and extreme weather, which should lower long-term maintenance costs. Pacific Technologies New Zealand’s General Manager, Danish Khalil, described the installation as straightforward and capable of delivering immediate benefits, with plans to extend the solution across the region to strengthen overall water management.

This smart metering effort fits within WAF’s broader Water Sector Strategy 2050, which emphasizes clean water, safe sanitation, sustainability, and workforce development. The move also aligns with ongoing regional pushes to modernize water infrastructure and improve service delivery.

Context from related progress shows a broader push toward reduced losses and expanded coverage. In related developments, WAF has previously reported a reduction in non-revenue water from 47% to 45% and the completion of multiple major projects, including the Waila Pipeline and enhancements to the River Water Supply Scheme, supported by substantial capital expenditure. The authority has also advanced rural water schemes and rainwater harvesting initiatives, underscoring a wider commitment to resilience and access across Fiji.

Overall, the smart metering project signals a positive step in Fiji’s ongoing effort to modernize its water sector, improve efficiency, and deliver more reliable service to households and communities while laying groundwork for regional expansion and future investments. The focus on real-time data and automated readings is expected to support faster responses to leaks and faults, contributing to greater financial sustainability and better service outcomes for Fijian communities.
