In a substantial boost to Fiji’s economy, filmmakers have injected $255.9 million and created 1,268 jobs over the past two years, as revealed by Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad. In 2022 alone, the film industry spurred $113.8 million in new economic activity, resulting in 826 new jobs, with local spending reaching $40.6 million. These figures were shared by Professor Prasad during his address at the Suva International Short Film Festival 2025, emphasizing the government’s ongoing support for the film sector.

For the 2025/2026 budget, Professor Prasad announced a film tax rebate and allocated $10.3 million for new productions. Qualifying projects must invest at least $250,000 in Fiji. Additionally, the government is exploring initiatives like establishing film studios and a large underwater filming tank, alongside nurturing the development of skilled local crews and actors.

Professor Prasad also highlighted the potential to foster local talent through the Film Fiji audio-visual lab and the establishment of an audio-visual incubator. His comments resonate with past discussions emphasizing the industry’s crucial role in the Fijian economy—previous reports indicate a contribution of $255 million and the creation of approximately 1,200 jobs through international projects.

Another report noted Film Fiji’s role in the economy, with projects facilitating $208 million in international film production budgets. Despite financial constraints, Film Fiji has successfully attracted high-profile productions like “Survivor” and “Love Island,” which contributed substantially to the local economy. The government’s continuous backing and strategic initiatives suggest a promising future for Fiji’s film industry, which is anticipated to yield economic growth, cultural enrichment, and elevate Fiji’s profile on the global stage.

Efforts to solidify Fiji as an attractive filming location continue amid stiff competition from countries offering more competitive incentives. The Fijian government faces past rebate liabilities but is gradually addressing them.

Fiji’s commitment to strengthening its audio-visual sector reflects a forward-thinking approach that not only aims to boost the economy but also enriches the nation’s cultural identity. By supporting both international productions and homegrown creatives, Fiji is setting the stage for a sustainable and vibrant film industry that benefits the community and enhances its global standing.
