Fiji Rolls Out Cashless Transit with Upgraded e-Transport System

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka recently highlighted the transformational impact of Fiji’s upgraded e-Transport system on public transport efficiency, addressing longstanding commuter issues. The phased rollout of this enhanced system has been meticulously designed to guarantee a seamless transition. Vodafone has expanded its network of top-up agents, simplified the process for card upgrades, and enhanced accessibility for rural users.

The newly improved e-Transport mobile app now provides passengers with the ability to check balances, top up accounts, and manage multiple cards effectively, with additional features such as QR Pay expected to be introduced shortly. Since launching in 2017, the e-Transport platform has processed over 500 million transactions, totaling more than $650 million FJD. This success underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining affordable fares while advancing Fiji’s digital transformation agenda.

Related efforts in the public transport sector indicate a broader push towards modernization. Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica recently announced a new app that will enable real-time tracking of bus card payments, aiming to enhance convenience and transparency for commuters. This app reflects significant strides towards creating a more integrated transport system, encompassing buses, taxis, minivans, and shipping services.

Despite the initial challenges encountered in implementing the e-ticketing system, such as accessibility concerns for certain demographics and technical issues with card usage, there is a shared optimism among stakeholders regarding the future of Fiji’s public transport. The growing acceptance of digital payment methods illustrates a positive change, as many commuters begin to appreciate the benefits of a cashless system, including enhanced operational efficiency and reduced chances of revenue loss.

As Fiji continues to embrace technological solutions, the government’s ongoing commitment to improving user experience through better service delivery and accessibility for all citizens paints a hopeful picture for the future of public transportation in the nation. The collaborative approach among stakeholders is crucial in addressing the remaining challenges, paving the way for a more efficient and sustainable transport experience that serves all Fijians.
