The Ministry of Health and Medical Services is actively upgrading its radiology services, replacing outdated 15-year-old analog X-ray machines with state-of-the-art digital systems that incorporate advanced Artificial Intelligence diagnostic capabilities.

Sefanaia Takotavuki, Senior Biomedical Engineer in charge of the initiative, announced the transition away from manual film processing, which has been a longstanding method in the healthcare system. The new batch of equipment includes 18 cutting-edge digital X-ray units, both floor- and ceiling-mounted, sourced from a prominent Chinese manufacturer through a local supplier following a competitive tender process.

One of the notable improvements with these new systems is the integration of Artificial Intelligence, designed to boost diagnostic accuracy and increase operational efficiency. The installation of these digital units has already commenced at significant healthcare facilities, including the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva, as well as locations in Nausori and Taveuni. Additional units will be allocated to major sub-divisional and divisional hospitals, ensuring that even remote rural facilities have improved access to high-quality radiology services.

Takotavuki highlighted that these upgrades are expected to greatly diminish patient wait times and enhance the quality of medical images. This modernization marks a significant advancement in patient care and reflects a proactive approach in enhancing diagnostic efficiency throughout Fiji’s public health infrastructure. The initiative promises to make a positive impact on healthcare delivery across the nation, ensuring all patients receive timely and accurate diagnoses.
