In the past day, Fiji Seismology has detected a total of 20 earthquakes in the Northern division. These tremors, which are classified as shallow, registered magnitudes between 1.5 and 3.8. Most of the seismic activity is occurring offshore Vanua Levu, particularly along the Fiji Fracture Zone, the nation’s most active seismic area. According to Fiji Seismology, it is not uncommon to experience daily seismic events in this region.
Moreover, specifically in the Savusavu Bay area, six earthquakes were recorded overnight, contributing to an ongoing seismic swarm. The magnitude of these quakes ranged from 1.5 to 2.4, including two consecutive tremors of magnitude 2.4 at 7:25 PM, which were felt by residents in Wailevu West, Cakaudrove Province.
While these occurrences are not deemed alarming, Fiji Seismology emphasizes the importance of being prepared, given the country’s position within a seismically active zone.
In summary, the frequency of these minor earthquakes serves as a reminder of Fiji’s geological dynamics, highlighting the need for community readiness and awareness. While the current seismic activity may sound concerning, it’s reassuring to note that such events are typical for the region. Preparations and education on earthquake safety can enhance community resilience and ensure that citizens remain safe amidst natural occurrences.
