The Fiji Roads Authority is facing challenges due to the rapid increase in traffic on the roads and the limitations of current infrastructure. Chief Executive Apisai Ketenilagi acknowledged the pressing need for improvements, particularly highlighting the two-lane road between Laqere and Nadera, which necessitates widening.
To tackle this issue, plans are underway to expand key arteries such as Ratu Dovi Road and Fletcher Road. Ketenilagi outlined that the initial design efforts would start from Laqere Junction, extending through areas significantly impacted by new developments, including the Valelevu Tax-Free Zone. Additionally, a new direct link from Tuirara to Veikoba, reconnecting to Khalsa Road, aims to alleviate congestion by providing alternative routes.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Fiji Roads Authority to enhance transport infrastructure, a need that has been echoed in previous discussions about the Suva-Nausori corridor. Recent reports have mentioned similar plans to widen roads in this region, with a focus on creating a four-lane system that would ease the burden of traffic congestion and improve overall transport efficiency.
By proactively addressing these infrastructural challenges, the Fiji Roads Authority aims not just to respond to current issues but also to prepare for future traffic demands, potentially leading to a smoother commute for residents and stimulating economic growth through improved accessibility.
