Fiji Roads Authority Workers Vote to Strike Over Pay Disputes

More than 100 employees of the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) have decided to go on strike, according to the Construction Energy & Timber Workers Union of Fiji (CETWUF), which represents the workers. These union members are employed in FRA offices as well as at various work sites.

CETWUF secretary-general John Paul expressed frustration that management has rejected their requests for a salary increase. The union claims this increase is necessary for cost-of-living adjustments, which have not been implemented since 2017. Paul noted that it is concerning that a government-owned entity like FRA, which is entirely funded by the government, refuses to eliminate contract-based positions despite a significant labor shortage in the construction sector.

Additionally, Paul criticized FRA for relying on legal advice funded by taxpayers while resisting changes to contract employment. He also pointed out the absence of a full-time CEO since the previous CEO’s resignation in early 2023, arguing that the organization cannot function effectively under continual board interference without qualified leadership.

Union members voted for action last month, and Paul warned that the public may face disruptions in FRA operations across the country in the coming months due to the ongoing dispute. Questions were directed to FRA for comment, but no response was received before publication.
