The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has acknowledged that Fletcher Higgins, a key road maintenance contractor, has issued a 28-day notice to terminate its contract, which will result in the cessation of maintenance operations by November 20, 2025. This decision comes on the heels of the company’s announcement that it will lay off 157 workers, further underscoring the financial turmoil faced by the contractor.
In a statement, the FRA expressed regret over Fletcher Higgins’ decision, noting that it was made at the contractor’s “own discretion.” The FRA emphasized that it has fulfilled all its contractual and financial obligations to the company, ensuring that all payments for maintenance work, including any claims for cost escalations, are fully up to date. The FRA underlined the importance of its positive working relationship with Fletcher Higgins, which has been in place since 2017.
To mitigate any disruption to essential maintenance services while new tenders are prepared, the FRA has granted a nine-month extension to all current contractors, including Fletcher Higgins. This strategic decision aims to maintain the safety and reliability of Fiji’s road infrastructure.
Fletcher Higgins’ ongoing challenges have been made evident by recent reports of significant job losses and dwindling operational capacity. The workloads awarded to the company under the maintenance contracts have reportedly decreased, prompting concerns about financial sustainability and the potential for further layoffs. Notably, the Construction, Energy and Timber Workers Union of Fiji (CETWUF) has raised alarms about the implications of these redundancies, emphasizing that the company’s difficulties could adversely affect the local workforce and economy.
Despite the bleak situation, both the FRA and union representatives have expressed hope for a resolution favorable to the workers. Through open dialogue and cooperation among the FRA, Fletcher Higgins, and government stakeholders, there is a collective aspiration to preserve jobs and stabilize the local economy.
As these developments unfold, the FRA remains committed to ensuring the safety and efficiency of Fiji’s road network, working diligently to navigate the complexities of the current situation while prioritizing the welfare of the community.
