Road users are being urged to remain extra vigilant and take necessary precautions while traveling, especially in light of heavy rain and flash flood warnings currently in effect. This message was emphasized by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in a statement released earlier today.

LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokowasa stressed the importance of responsibility and caution from all road users, noting that adverse weather conditions significantly raise the risks of road accidents. With the ongoing downpour, drivers are expected to play a crucial role in preventing collisions during these wet weather periods.

Rokowasa advised motorists to modify their driving behaviors to align with the current conditions. This includes reducing speed, increasing the distance between vehicles, and avoiding sudden braking or sharp turns that could lead to loss of control on slippery roads. He also reminded drivers to ensure that their headlights are on during heavy rain and that their windscreen wipers, tires, brakes, and lights are in proper working condition before setting out on any journey.

Furthermore, the Chief Executive is urging drivers to remain alert, particularly when navigating areas that are known to be prone to flooding, landslips, or falling debris. “Never attempt to drive through flooded roads,” he cautioned, as it can be challenging to gauge water depth and quickly moving water can easily sweep vehicles off the road. If visibility deteriorates or conditions worsen, motorists should slow down or safely pull over until it is safe to proceed. The combination of reduced visibility, waterlogged surfaces, and the threat of flash flooding can make even familiar routes unexpectedly perilous.

In addition to LTA’s warnings, the Fiji Meteorological Service announced that a low-pressure system continues to impact the country, causing persistent heavy rain and thunderstorms, along with possible flash floods in low-lying and flood-prone areas. This ongoing weather system underscores the need for heightened awareness and vigilance among all road users.
